Privacy

What this site collects, how it is used, and how to change your choices.

The short version

Nothing is sold on this site, and it carries no advertising. We ask once for permission to count your visit. If you decline, the site still works and no analytics data is recorded. Information submitted through the story and grant forms is retained so we can review and respond to it.

Analytics, only if you allow it

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which stories people read. It is switched off by default. No analytics cookie is set, no visit is counted, and nothing that identifies you is sent to Google, until you choose “Allow analytics” on the banner.

Before you choose, your browser still sends Google a small signal recording that you have not consented — this is a technical requirement of how consent signaling works, not a choice we make per visitor. That signal carries no cookie, no ID that persists between visits, and nothing personal, and it is discarded rather than counted as a visit.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat that as a no automatically and do not ask.

What Google Analytics receives, once allowed: pages viewed, roughly how long for, approximate location from your IP address (city level, not an address), and general device and browser information. We do not send it your name or email, and we have not enabled advertising features, remarketing, or any cross-site tracking on this property.

Your choice is stored in a cookie called privacy_consent for one year. You can change it any time using Privacy choices in the footer, or by clearing cookies for this site.

What you send us

There are three forms on this site.

  • Share your story — your name, email, the story itself, an optional photo, how you found us, and how you want to be credited. Used to edit and publish your story with your approval, and to talk to you about it. Nothing is published until you have seen the final version and agreed.
  • Grant application — your organization’s details and contact information. Used to assess the application and get in touch. If we make a grant, the organization name, date and equipment appear in the public grant log. Tell us if publishing your location would put anyone at risk and we will leave it out.
  • Email list — your email address, used to send one email a month about new stories. Nothing else. You can leave at any time.

Submissions are delivered to a form-processing service and then handled by a person. We do not sell any of it, we do not license it, and we do not use anything you send in advertising.

Your story stays yours

Publishing a story here does not sign it away. You choose how you are credited — full name, first name, initials, or anonymously — and you can change that, correct the story, or have it removed, by emailing [email protected].

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how it is used. If you are in the UK or EU those rights come from the UK GDPR and GDPR; if you are in California or a US state with a comparable law, from that law.

You do not need to cite a statute. Email [email protected] and tell us what you would like us to do.

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are used in US state privacy laws. There is no advertising on this site.

Who else is involved

  • Cloudflare hosts and serves this site, and processes requests in order to deliver pages and protect against abuse.
  • Google Analytics — only after you allow it.
  • A form-processing service receives what you submit through the forms above.
  • An email service holds the mailing list, if you join it.

The Gear page links out to balazsboxing.com, which is a separate site with its own privacy policy and its own cookies. Those links identify this site as the referral source so we can measure visits to the store. No information about you personally travels with them.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has sent us something, email us and we will delete it.
